about

This song is inspired by the bravery of Autherine Lucy, the first African-American student to attend the University of Alabama in 1956. This song is also inspired by the civil rights movement, and the March trilogy by Nate Powell.

lyrics

Born in the 1920’s - in an age of suppressive whites.
The hateful years that followed – undermining civil rights.
Someone needed to break the repressing shell.
so Lucy chose to educate herself.

Protest! - They threw rocks when you arrived.
Protest! - all you ever wanted was a chance for an equal life.

Although it lost its darkest glow-
We still have a long long way to go.
Segregation.

The 50ties came – not without its blood.
They marched for better things – new visions pulled the cart.
Someone needed to break the repressing shell.
So Lucy chose to educate herself.

Protest! - they didn't want to let you in.
Protest! - but couldn't stop the non-violent sit-ins.

Although it lost its darkest glow-
We still have a long long way to go.

Those brave minds - chose to unite-
to break the chain - for civil rights.
It's inevitable - and it will come.
The 50ties ended – it worked they shut you up.
Yet thirty years later – your entry stood unblocked.
Someone needed to break the repressing shell.
This segregation needs to unbind itself.
